CURRAGH, IRELAND - JULY 1: Seamus Hefferman and Soldier Of Fortune land The Budweiser Irish Derby Race run at The Curragh Racecourse on July 1, 2007, in The Curragh,Ireland. (Photo by Julian Herbert/Getty Images)The 2007 Irish Derby saw an exceptionally convincing win by Soldier Of Fortune. Ridden by Seamus Heffernan and trained by the now legendary Aidan O’Brien, Soldier Of Fortune surged ahead a quarter mile into the race, and proceeded to thunder past the finish line a full nine lengths ahead of the runner-up.

Soldier Of Fortune proved his worth prior to the Irish Derby when he secured a fifth position in the Epsom Derby and wins in both the Chester Vase and the French Prix Noailles. With a preference for soft ground, Soldier Of Fortune was in luck on Irish Derby day, with soft going at the Curragh.

Aidan O’Brien put any further doubts about his superiority to rest when horses he trained took both second and third places – as well as the win – in the race. Runner-up at the Epsom Derby, Eagle Mountain held second position in the race from a furlong-and-a-half down. Approaching the straight, however, he was forced to concede this position to Alexander Of Hale, taking third place by just a head.

At two-and-half furlongs down, Boscobel briefly led the race – but didn’t have the power to match Soldier Of Fortune and eventually had to make way for the mad dash to the finish of both Alexander Of Hale and Eagle Mountain .
