Trainer Robin Bastiman is confident that the veteran sprinter will be able to go for the Nunthorpe Stakes hat-trick, but admits that he will make a ‘late decision’ next week.

“Everything is OK with him at the moment. He came out of his first canter back on Friday fine and has done another couple this morning,” said Bastiman.

“He seems fine again and having spoken to the owner, we’ve decided to leave him in the confirmations, but it’s going to be a late decision on whether he’s going to run or not.

“He’ll have to have a gallop one day, probably on Tuesday, and if he comes out of that all right, I think he’ll probably run.”

Aiden O’Brien’s Starspangledbanner is going for a hat-trick of his own, having won his last two Group One outings at the Golden Jubilee and July Cup, and is the current 2/1 favourite in the ante-post betting.

Barry Hills’s Equiano remains the closest challenger in the betting and is currently priced at 5/2, with Jeremy Noseda’s Fleeting Spirit and previous winner Kingsgate Native next best at 6/1.

The six-year-old has won five of his last six starts, including victories in his last two races – the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and the Galway Hurdle Handicap last month.

Next week’s big race will be Overturn’s first run at the Knavesmire and there were concerns that the Ebor could be one race too many.

But trainer McCain reports the gelding is in fine health and feels there is no reason not to send his charge to York, revealing it is ‘more than likely’ he will take his chance.

McCain said: “He was a bit subdued for a couple of days after Galway but I think that was more down to the travelling than anything else. Since then he’s come back really well and he worked really nice on Wednesday, so as it stands at the moment, we’re almost definitely going.”

Overturn is one of 57 remaining entries for the race, with Richard Hannon’s Martyr the current favourite in Betfred’s ante post betting.

Tastahil, trained by Barry Hills (whose Equiano is 5/1 to win the Sprint Cup at Haydock), tops the weights, while another leading contender, Harris Tweed, has been confirmed to run.

The four-year-old son of Red Ransom showed that he still retains all of his ability when running affine second to Paco Boy at Newbury in May in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and again looked in the process of making his presence felt when hampered at a vital stage in last month’s Summer Mile at Ascot.

Granted a clear run this time around, Ouqba looks sure to be there or thereabouts in a race that promises to be well worth watching.

The Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned colt, who was the recent impressive winner of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, suffered the leg injury during a routine spin on the gallops in Newmarket. And following an operation on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained son of Dansili, John Warren, co-owner of Highclere Stud, said: “He had a comfortable night. The surgery he had was straight forward and all of those things.

“Hopefully we will know more later this afternoon.”

Harbinger’s next race was scheduled to be in the Juddmonte International at York later this month. However with his absence from that meeting confirmed, Rip van Winkle has been promoted to favourite (11/8 Winner or E/W), while he is also set to miss the trip to France for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October.

Hannon’s horses have dominated the juvenile scene this season and Strong Suit will be one of the favourites for the race in Ireland on Sunday.

This juvenile is unbeaten in his last two racecourse appearances with a winning debut at Newbury followed by an impressive last gasp win at Elzaam in the group 2 Coventry stakes at Royal Ascot.

Strong Suit will take some beating at Leapardstown if he manages to keep up his current form and Hannon will be doing everything to make sure the horse is ready for the feature race.

The veteran trainer, who was honoured as the champion trainer in 1992, has worked with some successful horses including Mon Fils, Don’t Forget Me and Tirol who have all won the prestigious 2000 Guineas.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained colt finished sixth behind Rebel Soldier in the Gordon Stakes on Tuesday, despite being runner-up in the Queen’s Vase on his previous start.

Connections feel that he did not run his best at Goodwood though and are expecting a better performance in the Doncaster Classic in six weeks time.

Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said “He ran a bit free. It was too short a trip for him – a mile and a half – and he was a little bit gassy.

“Nonetheless he ran perfectly respectably. He’s better than that, though. If he hadn’t have run too free he certainly would have finished closer.

“The plan is to go for the St Leger and probably run him next in the Leger to give him more time.

“He’s developing all the time. He’s very much next year’s Cup horse but the Leger, Doncaster and the trip will suit him.”

Midas Touch and Rewilding are the 4/1 joint favourites for the St Leger, with Snow Fairy following at 7/1.

The two feature races at Galway are the Tote Galway Plate on Wednesday and the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday, and Irish bookies are expecting to see high turnover on both races.

Majestic Concorde, trained by the ‘King of Ballybrit’ – Dermot Weld, is the 6-1 favourite for the Galway Hurdle, whilst British raider Overturn is the current 7-1 market leader for the Galway Hurdle.

Hills are also betting on the Rooney Auctioneer-sponsored top jockey prizes, and the colour of the dress worn by the ‘best dressed lady’ – which will be presented on Thursday (Ladies Day).
