In the 2007 Eclipse Stakes, Ryan Moore’s decision to break away from the field at the bend and travel on his own up the stand side of the Sandown Park straight proved a winning one, with Notnowcato beating Authorized, the 2007 Vodafone Derby winner, by a length and a half.

Authorized, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam and ridden by Frankie Dettori, entered as the race favourite at odds of 4-7, with hopes of securing the first Eclipse/Derby double since Nashwan in 1989. However, Dettori didn’t foresee Moore’s decision to come down the stands side of the course. With the horses separated by the width of the track, Notnowcato secured the lead.

Of Notnowcato, Sir Michael Stoute said “This fellow is so honest and gives you everything. He’s a brave, honest horse and has not got the credit he deserves.”

Aidan O’Brien-trained George Washington, who entered the race at odds of 4-1, took third place by a head.
