The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is traditionally raced as the opening event of the Cheltenham Festival. The runners of the race are greeted with the famous ‘Cheltenham roar’ as they run past the grandstand on their way to the finishing post.
The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is open to 4 year old and above novices. The race is held on the Cheltenham Old Course, and covers a distance of 2 miles 110 yards, with runners required to clear eight hurdles during the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle was first raced in 1926 as the Gloucestershire Hurdle. The race included two divisions until 1972, and was first raced as the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 1974.
Although winners of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle only rarely go on to make a name for themselves as hurdlers or chasers, the race has produced a handful of champions, including 1964 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Flyingbolt.
