2010 Ryanair Chase

The Ryanair Chase, also known as the Festival Trophy, is a grade one national hunt chase run at the Cheltenham Festival in March. The race takes place on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse and covers a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.

The Ryanair Chase is open to 5 year old and older chasers, which are required to clear 17 hurdles during the course of the race. The short distance raced makes the Ryanair Chase one of the faster steeplechase events at the Cheltenham Festival.

Ryanair Chase History and Winners

The Ryanair Chase is descended from the Cathcart Chase, a race run over the same distance by novices and second season chasers, prior to the expansion of the Cheltenham Festival in 2005.

The race was re branded as the Festival Trophy in 2005 and opened to all chasers. A separate race, the Novices’ Handicap Race, was set up for novices over the same distance.

The partnership between trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Ruby Walsh has claimed two Ryanair Chase winner titles since the race was first run in 2005.
