Festival Handicap Chase

The Festival Handicap Chase (formerly known as the William Hill Trophy) has traditionally been the first handicap race run at the Cheltenham Festival. The grade 3 steeplechase is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse, over a distance of 3 miles and 110 yards.

Entry to the Festival Handicap Chase is open to 5 year old and older chasers. While the event is not as prestigious as some of the feature steeplechase events, it can provide a good indication of the form of the various stables competing at the Cheltenham Festival.

Festival Chase History and Winners

The Festival Handicap Chase has been raced for more than half a century. During this time the race has developed a reputation for showcasing future Cheltenham Gold Cup winners, with five Festival Handicap winners going on to claim the Cheltenham Festival’s biggest prize.

As something of a racing lottery, the Festival Handicap Chase rarely produces double winners. Scot Lane was the last horse to win consecutive National Hunt Handicap Chase titles, in 1982 and 1983.
