Nicky Henderson is one of the most successful trainers in national hunt racing. Henderson has been an important figure in the sport for three decades, and currently has more wins at the Cheltenham Festival than any trainer still active in national hunt racing.
Nicky Henderson began his career in national hunt racing as an amateur jockey, riding 75 winners, before beginning his training career as an assistant to Fred Winter. Henderson struck gold within his first decade of training, with See You Then winning the Champion Hurdle three times between 1985 and 1987.
Henderson is known for making a slow start to the season, with his horses tending to peak at the climax of the season – the Cheltenham Festival. Henderson previously worked mainly with Irish jockey Mick Fitzgerald, but since Fitzgerald’s retirement has been working with Barry Geraghty.
Nicky Henderson has an impressive record at the Cheltenham Festival. While he has never won the Gold Cup, he has claimed the Champion Hurdle four times, and also won the Queen Mother Champion Chase and Triumph Hurdle. 2010 was one of his most successful festivals, as he won two out of three of the high profile hurdles races at the Cheltenham meeting.
Henderson has won a variety of other key Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Festival races, including the Arkle Challenge Trophy, Royal & SunAlliance Chase and King George VI Chase. Henderson was rewarded for his achievements with the Champion Trainer title for the 1985/1986 and 1986/1987 seasons.
Nicky Henderson was born on the 10th of October 1950. Henderson lives in Berkshireand works at stables in Seven Barrows, Lambourn.
