Henrietta Knight is one of a handful of female trainers to have achieved significant success in national hunt racing. Besides being a prolific winner in regular season national hunt races, Knight has also won a selection of the most prestigious festival races. She is best known for training one of the greatest racehorses in recent memory – Best Mate.
Henrietta Knight was a successful part-time point-to-point trainer during the 1980s, training racehorses whilst simultaneously working as a biology and history teacher. During the 1990s she turned her hand to training national hunt racehorses full time and soon built up a respectable win percentage of 16%.
During the late 1990s Knight began working with racehorse owner, Jim Lewis, who was to provide her with her greatest racehorse, Best Mate. At the turn of the millennium Knight came of age as a racehorse trainer, as she racked up a series of wins in some of national hunt’s most prestigious races.
The untimely death of Best Mate dealt a heavy blow to Knight’s enterprise and the stable has gone through a fallow period during the last three years, as winning percentages have dropped steadily. Knight, however, remains an important and active figure in national hunt racing.
Henrietta Knight is one of the most successful trainers in the history of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, having won the race three times with Best Mate. Knight also boasts two wins in the King George VI Chase, courtesy of Best Mate and another of her stable stars – Edredon Bleu.
Henrietta Knight was born on the 15th of December 1946. She is married to former Champion Jockey Terry Biddlecombe. An Oxford graduate, Knight is also a former Olympic badminton player, and served as a selector for the British Olympic equestrian team in 1984 and 1988.
