The third day of the Cheltenham Festival celebrates the ladies of jump racing with “Ladies Day”. An award is presented to the woman who has made the greatest contribution to jump racing. Nominations are received from woman trainers, charity workers, stable staff and other areas of jump racing. The 2007 winner, Heather Atkinson, was the Senior Nurse in the Jockeys Hospital at Cheltenham for over thirty years. The 2008 award was shared between Ann Saunders of the Professional Jockeys Association and Lady Chicky Oaksey of the Injured Jockeys Fund.
The Ladbrokes World Hurdle is the feature race of the day.
The Cheltenham Festival is known for its high fashion and style, and features outfits ranging from sublime to sexy to silly. The Cheltenham Festival Ladies Day 2010 is the day to see and be seen, with awards provided for the Best Dressed Lady, Best Accessories and Best Hat. A ceremony featuring the presentation of these awards is made before the horses enter the paddock for the first race.
The day is also about assisting in great causes, and the Cheltenham Festival Ladies Day 2009 will contribute to The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), an institution set-up in 1933 to provide support to rural woman of the world.
