Graham Lee is a successful jockey in Irish and English national hunt racing. During his career, Lee has worked with some of the top stables in national hunt racing, and is one of the few jockeys in the sport to have put pressure on Tony McCoy in the race for the Champion Jockey title.
Racing Profile:
Graham Lee first came to the attention of British racing fans in 2002, when he began working with trainer Howard Johnson on a regular basis. During the period of his association with Johnson, Lee made it into the top two of the Jumps Jockey Championship, becoming only the third jockey in the past decade to achieve this feat.
During the 2007/2008 national hunt season, Graham Lee appeared to be on the verge of wresting the Champion Jockey title from Tony McCoy. However, a serious fall caused multiple fractures to his jaw, which resulted in him missing several weeks of racing, and eventually finishing the season in 5th place for the Jockey Championship.
Lee’s injury eventually led to him breaking his association with Howard Johnson, and moving to the stable of Irish trainer Ferdy Murphy. Lee’s fortunes have declined somewhat since joining Murphy’s stable, but he remains one of the most highly rated jockeys in national hunt racing.
Achievements:
Whilst Graham Lee has never won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, he does have an impressive record at the meeting, and claimed the Top Jockey title in 2005 by riding 3 winners. Lee also has a feature race win under his belt, having won the 2005 World Hurdle on Inglis Drever.
The biggest achievement of Lee’s career to date was his win on Amberleigh House in the 2004 Grand National, riding for Ginger McCain. Lee won the Scottish Grand National in the same year, and came within an inch of taking a National treble in 2007, when he finished second in the Irish Grand National on Nine de Sivola.
Bio:
Graham Lee comes from a family with rich sporting traditions. His grandfather, Matthew Lee, played football for Scotland and Kilmarnock, and his brother and cousin are both flat racing jockeys. Lee is married with two daughters, and close friends with top jockey Tony McCoy.
