Breeders Cup Marathon
The Breeders’ Cup Marathon is the premier long distance race run during the course of the annual Breeders’ Cup Championship. The race is a weight-for-age handicap open to 3-year-old and above thoroughbred stayers.
The Breeders’ Cup Marathon is raced on a dirt or synthetic dirt track. It was originally run over an intermediate distance of 1½ miles before race organizers increased the distance to 1 ¾ mile following the completion of the 2008 race.
The Breeders’ Cup Marathon is of particular interest to trainers with American bred and trained stayers. European participants in the race are far and few between, with only one qualifying event held in Europe (the Diamond Stakes, held in Ireland).
Feeder races for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon include the Greenwood Cup Handicap, the Turfway Park Fall Championship, the Cougar II Handicap and the Diamond Stakes.
Breeders’ Cup Marathon Betting
It’s difficult to forecast betting trends in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon given that the race is still in its infancy. However, it is definitely worth restricting bets on the race to racehorses that have won over distance of 11 furlongs or greater earlier in their careers.
