Breeders’ Cup Turf History

The Breeders’ Cup Turf has been raced as part of the Breeders’ Cup series since 1984. Prior to this date the race was known as the Washington, D.C. International Stakes and was run annually at Laurel Park racecourse.

The Breeders’ Cup Turf attracts top quality entries, making it one of the most competitive races of the year. Given the high quality of the fields contesting the race, Aidan O’Brien’s High Chaparral could be regarded as the greatest ever Breeders’ Cup Turf winner for the 2003 dead heat which saw him become the only horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf twice.
