Breeders Cup Mile

The Breeders’ Cup Mile is a group one race run at the annual Breeders’ Cup thoroughbred racing series. The race is run over a distance of a mile over a grass racetrack, and is open to 3-year-old and above thoroughbred racehorses.

The Breeders’ Cup Mile is a weight for age handicap, with older participants penalised with additional weight. One of the mile handicap highlights of the thoroughbred racing season, the Breeders’ Cup Mile offers a prize fund of $2 million.

Breeders’ Cup Mile History

The Breeders’ Cup Mile was first run at the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Series in 1984. Unlike many other important Breeders’ Cup races, the Breeders’ Cup Mile has produced a number of multiple winners, with Miesque, Lure and Da Hoss all having taken two race wins.

Foreign trainers tend to do well in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, with French trainers and their entries boasting a particularly impressive record in the race. Five Breeders’ Cup Mile winners were owned by Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos.
