Breeders Cup Ladies Classic

The Breeders Cup Ladies Classic, formerly known as the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, is a group one thoroughbred race run during the course of the annual Breeders’ Cup meeting. Entry to the race is restricted to 3-year-old and above fillies and mares.

The Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic is run over a distance of 9 furlongs on a dirt track. The race is a handicap, with weight allocated according to age with older entries penalised with heavier weights. A $2 million prize fund is on offer in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.

Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic History

The Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic has been run since the inception of the Breeders’ Cup in 1984. During this period the distance run during the race has increased from 1¼ miles to the present distance of 9 furlongs.

Only Bayakoya has managed to achieve more than one win in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, winning the race in 1989 and 1990. American trainers have traditionally monopolised the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, with Darrell Lukas training a record four Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic winners.
