The Breeders’ Cup is the richest and most prestigious thoroughbred race meeting in North America. The event is scheduled towards the end of the northern hemisphere flat racing season, and represents the largest collection of group 1 thoroughbred races in the sport.
The event is also famous for the size of the prize funds paid out for each race, with over $25 million in prize money paid out over the course of the Breeders Cup. Until recently the second day of the Breeders’ Cup was the single richest day in sport, before being eclipsed by the Dubai World Cup meeting.
The Breeders’ Cup meeting is usually held during the month of October. The event takes place over a period of two days, with 5 races run on the opening day of the meeting, and 9 run on the second day of the Breeders’ Cup. Races cover various distances and formats, and are run on both turf and dirt tracks.
The Most Important Two Days in Thoroughbred Racing
The Breeders’ Cup is marketed as the World Championship of Thoroughbred Racing. While there is not a significant foreign presence at the meeting, an increasing number of top European and Australian thoroughbreds are traveling to the Breeders’ Cup each year, and have recently begun to produce results in some of the meeting’s top races.
Unlike other major race meetings in the sport of thoroughbred racing, the Breeders’ Cup has no permanent home. Some compare the event to a golfing ‘major’, as it is rotated amongst the highest rated racecourses in the United States and Canada. The meeting enjoys excellent coverage, with ESPN providing live coverage of each race.
Breeders’ Cup Betting
The Breeders’ Cup is a significant betting event, with racing fans across the world tuning in to see the world’s finest thoroughbreds in action. Parimutuel betting markets in the United States run into the millions of dollars every year, and it is not unusual for a single lucky punter to walk away from the meeting with over a million dollars in winnings.
The Breeders’ Cup also receives comprehensive betting coverage from bookmakers and betting exchanges in the United Kingdom. Punters can access antepost markets in the week before the meeting, and a selection of additional betting markets for each race are made available on race day. The prestige of the event encourages UK bookmakers to offer great daily specials on select Breeders’ Cup races during the course of the meeting.
