Gold Cup

The Gold Cup is one of the most important races in the build up to the Grand National. This Grade 3 national hunt steeplechase is run at Chelteham Racecourse in December, and features a number of entries who will go on to compete in the Grand National in April.

Many regard the Gold Cup as the sequel to the Paddy Power Gold Cup. The winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup tends to enter the race as a favourite, but carrying substantial weight. A win in both races is therefore a solid indication of the type of class required to win the Grand National.

The Gold Cup is raced over a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs over the Cheltenham New Course. The race is open to 4 year old and above steeplechasers, and awards over £150,000 in prize money. Gold Cup Betting & Trends

  • Weight is not a major factor in this race, with the weight carried by recent winners of the Gold Cup ranging between 10st and top weight.
  • The majority of race winners have been between the ages of 6 and 8 years of age.
  • The antepost favourite rarely wins Gold Cup, and winners tend to be priced between 4/1 and 22/1.
  • Lay the favourite. With the favourite often priced below 4/1 lay bets will both pay out in the long term and come with minimal liability attached. Gold Cup Odds Gold Cup Winners & History

The Gold Cup was first run in 1963. Originally run as the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup, sponsorship for the race has changed a number of times in the last several decades. Frigid conditions at Cheltenham Racecourse, including frost and snow, have led to the race being cancelled several times in its history.

No racehorse has ever won the Gold Cup twice. Many regard the trio of Senor El Betrutti (1997), Pegwell Bay (1988) and Exotic Dancer (2006) as the outstanding winners of the Gold Cup, as these racehorses managed to win the race after taking the Paddy Power Gold Cup.
