Wales plays France in the first of the 2011 World Cup semifinals on Saturday. The match has been labelled as the biggest moment in Welsh rugby history as the small British nation looks to secure it place in the World Cup final for the first time in its history.
Wales and France have clashed eleven times in the past decade. France has been dominant during this period, taking nine wins, while Wales has won just two fixtures, and last beat France in March of 2008.
Wales continue to look like one of the form teams at the tournament after comfortably putting away Ireland in the quarterfinals.
The Irish had no answer to resolute Welsh defence, and the Welsh looked extremely impressive on attack, putting away three quality tries. With a young, confident squad and strength off the bench, Wales is looking like a formidable semifinalist.
France, meanwhile, did as we expected and produced a match-winning performance when it counted most. The French bounced back from an unprecedented defeat against Tonga to put away England with relative ease.
Most importantly for the French, the backline finally seemed to click in this fixture as both Vincent Clerc and Maxime Mermoz scored quality tries. While some form is welcome for the French, questions are going to be asked of their ability to perform consistently under pressure.
Critics of the French side would do well to remember that the current squad is capable of producing wins on a consistent basis, and secured a Grand Slam in the Six Nations as recently as 2010.
Bookies have marked Wales as marginal favourites in the betting markets – a fair reflection of Wales’s performances in the tournament to date.
However, there is absolutely no telling which French side will show up for the match on Saturday. If they can maintain passion and interest for another match they should have the beating of Wales, but any lack of composure or interest will most likely see them run foul of the talented Welsh backs.
Wales have shown a real sense of purpose and composure at this tournament, and there’s no question they have the hunger and talent to make the final. We’re going to back them to secure a historic place in the finals at the best match odds we can find.
