Wales vs. Fiji Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

The Pool of Death serves up its final clash on Sunday as Wales clashes with Fiji in a re-run of the fixture Wales lost at the 2007 World Cup. Wales will be out for revenge on Sunday, and with qualification for the quarterfinals virtually certain, will fancy their chances of putting a big win over the islanders.

Wales vs. Fiji Trends Analysis

Wales and Fiji have clashed four times in the past decade. Wales has struggled to subdue Fiji, losing two fixtures, winning one and drawing one.

The Welsh team at the 2011 Rugby World Cup look more composed and confident than the 2007 edition of the team. After coming close to upsetting South Africa in the first round, Wales took a close match against Samoa and rolled over Namibia.

The victory over Namibia highlighted some of the depth in the Wales side, with winger George North and center Scott Williams both showing star potential. With world class backs on the bench, Wales will feel confident of doing most of the running on Sunday.

Fiji has had a poor World Cup in comparison. The islanders beat Namibia comfortably, but were outplayed by Samoa and thrashed by South Africa.

This team bears little resemblance to the one that defeated Wales in 2007 and took a place in the quarterfinals, and have neither the form nor confidence to win this fixture.

Wales vs. Fiji Betting Tips

Wales should win on Sunday – particularly now that the pressure to qualify for the quarterfinals is off. A single point will do it for Wales, and they’d need to lose to Fiji by 38 points to surrender their place in the quarters to Samoa.

We think Wales should win this match comfortably, and their -15 handicap looks reasonable based on their form and depth.

Our Wales vs. Fiji betting tip is therefore to back Wales with a -15.5 handicap at Evens at Betfred.
