Wales will look for the consolation of a bronze medal against Australia on Friday as they seek to make amends for an untimely exit from the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Wales and Australia have played one another ten times over the past decade. Australia has won seven of these fixtures, one match ended in a draw, and Wales has taken two wins – with the last of these coming in 2008.
The most recent meeting between these sides was in November of 2010, when Wales lost to Australia 25-16 at the Millennium Stadium.
Wales can count themselves extremely unfortunate that they are not facing New Zealand in Sunday’s final. The Welsh have been one of the top teams at the tournament, with their attacking style of play winning many fans amongst neutrals.
But for a missed conversion, a moment of insanity from Sam Warburton, and some harsh refereeing by Alain Rolland, Wales would be in the final. They have dominated every match that they have won, and were the dominant team in both the fixtures they lost.
How much willpower remains amongst a squad that must be gutted by missing out on a place in the final remains to be seen, and there’s a chance that the Welsh may put in a far more subdued performance on Friday.
Australia were fortunate to make the semifinal, and were duly put away with relative ease by New Zealand on the weekend. The team has never really sparked at the 2011 World Cup, and with Kurtley Beale sidelined by injury have lost one of their most potent attacking weapons.
However, the Australian side are consummate professionals, and will definitely not let their loss to New Zealand overshadow this fixture. With the pressure off, fans may finally see the Australian team put on the attacking performance they are capable of.
This may well produce some open, flowing rugby, and the match is for either team’s taking. While Wales has been the superior team at the tournament, Australia certainly has the capacity to win it.
Bookies are favouring Australia by a slim margin for this match, with a -3.5 handicap on the Wallabies in the no draw handicap betting markets.
While Australia has historically been the stronger team, this Welsh squad has talent to burn, and a point to prove in this fixture. With this in mind our Wales vs. Australia is to back the Welsh to end the tournament on a high with a straight back bet in the match betting markets.
