South Africa has named a strong team to take on Fiji in its second World Cup match, after Wales managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against the Springboks in the opening round, the Boks are taking no chances against a Fiji side that will try run them ragged.
South Africa and Fiji have met once in the past decade, with South Africa beating the Fijians 37-20 at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. That scoreline favours the Boks, who had a real fight on their hands in the fixture.
South Africa can’t be feeling too confident ahead of this match. They were comprehensively outplayed by Wales in virtually every department in the opening match, and only a wrong call on a penalty and two missed sitters by Wales prevented South Africa from losing to the Welsh for the second time in a century.
What was most worrying for South Africa was their failure to break through the Welsh backline, with Francois Hougaard eventually coming to the rescue from the bench. However, he hasn’t been named for this encounter, and the Boks are showing a real lack of pace amongst the backs.
Fiji’s Rugby World Cup got off to a better than expected start with a big win against an improved Namibia side. The big Fijians needed no directions for getting over the whitewash, and their backs look like they will be a real threat on Saturday.
However, Fiji has not performed very well against highly ranked sides in recent months, and will need to produce a significant improvement to push the Boks in this game.
South Africa looks like it has made some bad moves in selection for this match. While the defence will be stout, the Bok backline doesn’t look threatening, and if the Fijians start creating pressure on attack the match will get interesting.
While the Boks should win it, there’s the faintest scent of an upset about this match, and the Fijians will be taking confidence from the way the minnows have performed in this tournament to date.
With this in mind our South Africa vs Fiji betting tip is to take a look at the +22 handicap that bookies have pinned on Fiji. We don’t see South Africa winning this match by a clear three tries – particularly considering that they haven’t put more than 2 tries past an opposition team once this season.
