Scotland will be looking to ambush France at fortress Murrayfield this weekend, when they host Les Bleus in a critical Six Nations encounter. While the Scots may be out of the title running, a loss in this match for France would be a massive boost to England and Wales’s title hopes.
Scotland haven’t beaten France once in the past five years, not even managing to keep France under a 9 point victory during this period. In fact Scotland last beat France in 2006, when they ground out a 4 point win at Murrayfield.
The most recent meeting between these sides at Murrayfield saw France claim an 18-9 win, as Scotland once again struggled to score tries.
The Scots are still struggling to cross the whitewash, this despite finally ending their international try drought when Chris Laidlaw sneaked the ball over the line against Wales.
Despite the obvious talent in the backs, and the success of these same players at club level, the Scottish backline continues to botch solid opportunities, and lacks both confidence and cohesion. Nevertheless, there’s certainly the potential for the Scots to raise their game and put away the likes of France with attack rather than defence.
France have a long break to ponder the way forward in the Six Nations, with all their toughest fixtures still ahead of them following their comfortable victory over Italy.
Against Italy the French backline carried on from where they left off in the latter stages of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and we can expect more of the same on Sunday if the weather obliges. However, some rain could mute the French attack and put the match on a more even footing.
As it so happens, it looks like there’s reasonable chance of rain in Edinburgh on Sunday, which is likely to have a major impact on the match.
Bookies have given the Scots a +6.5 handicap for the match, anticipating either rain or a big performance from Scotland.
We like the look of the Scots at this handicap, as they should be able to keep the game tight, and could even win it with penalties. Our Scotland vs. France betting tip is therefore to take Scotland at +6.5 points at Bet365 at a price of 10/11.
