New Zealand takes on Japan in Thursday’s only Rugby World Cup fixture. This match is a real David vs Goliath encounter, with Japan looking to repeat the form that saw them give France a scare on the weekend.
New Zealand vs. Japan Trends Analysis
Japan and New Zealand last clashed at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, when New Zealand put 145 points past the hapless Cherry Blossoms in Bloemfontein.
New Zealand comes into its second game of the 2011 Rugby World Cup looking for a commanding performance. The All Blacks saw off Tonga with ease in the opening round, but struggled to maintain momentum in the second half of that match.
While the All Blacks now have three wins from their last five matches, and showed touches of real class against Tonga, they’re still not looking like World Champion material, and will need to put a big score past Japan to get the momentum they need going into the next round.

France’s performance against France will give it exactly the confidence it needs to stand up to the All Blacks. The Japanese will need to score tries to maintain respectability on the scoreboard, but are likely to be badly exposed on defence.

New Zealand is going to win this match, and the question to ask here is how much resistance the proud Japanese will put up.
