New Zealand has the luck of the draw on Sunday as it takes on Argentina in a battle for a place opposite either South Africa or Australia in the semis. Despite the loss of Dan Carter at flyhalf the All Blacks will be strong favourites to cruise into the semis.
New Zealand and Argentina have met just three times in the past decade. New Zealand won all of these encounters. However, Argentina was competitive in two of them, losing two fixtures by 6 points or less.
New Zealand comes into the quarterfinals reeling from the loss of star flyhalf Dan Carter. While the local press is playing up the ability of Colin Slade, there’s no doubt that the loss of Carter will affect the performance of the New Zealand backline, as well as the overall strategic game of the side.
New Zealand may have won all their pool games, however this may not be a good thing as they were not tested in a single fixture, as France failed to show up for their much-anticipated Group A clash. There’s a feeling that the All Blacks could therefore be exposed against a more determined, higher quality side.
Argentina is showing signs that it may be able to put up a fight against New Zealand. While their final Pool B clash against Georgia produced an unconvincing victory, they showed real determination and composure against both England and Scotland, and seem to have both the player depth and personnel to challenge the Southern Hemisphere teams.
Much will depend on the Argentinean forwards for this fixture, as they’ll need to disrupt New Zealand possession and put the All Black scrum under pressure to have a hope of winning this.
Bookies are predicting a walkover for New Zealand in this fixture with the All Blacks handed a -25.5 handicap at even odds in the no draw handicap betting markets.
We think that the disruptions to the New Zealand squad, combined with the determination of Argentina, will prevent the All Blacks from running away with this.
While Argentina have only the faintest sniff of an upset in this match, they should be strong enough to hold New Zealand to a respectable score. Our New Zealand vs. Argentina betting tip is therefore to take Argentina at +25.5 at even odds at Betfred.
