Ireland vs. Wales Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

Wales takes on Ireland in the first of the 2011 Rugby World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday. This all-Celtic affair will sadly send home a team who looks capable of challenging the Southern Hemisphere dominance of the tournament.

Ireland vs. Wales Trends Analysis

Wales and Ireland have played one another twelve times over the past decade. Wales has won just three of these clashes, while nine went the way of Ireland. Recent encounters between the two sides are more evenly balanced, with the sides sharing the spoils from their last four fixtures.

Ireland comes into this match looking strong after a classy performance against Italy in its final Pool C fixture. The Irish pulled away from the Italians in the second half, with the backs showing the penetration and power that has made Ireland a force in European rugby in the past half decade.

With four wins from four matches, Ireland has been one of the form teams at the tournament, and boasts the all-round game to put away the Southern Hemisphere giants, and is the only Northern Hemisphere team to have put away a SANZAR nation at this World Cup.

Wales, meanwhile, showed a dominant display of attacking and defensive rugby against Fiji on the weekend. The Welsh avenged their 2007 defeat to Fiji in style, putting 66 points past the islanders without conceding a single point.

Wales looks to have tremendous depth off the bench, particularly amongst the backs, and Warren Gatland is spoilt for choice when it comes to gamebreakers, with the likes of Scott Williams, Leigh Halfpenny and George North available to replace the stars of Welsh rugby.

Ireland vs. Wales Betting Tips

This will be a very evenly matched encounter. Bookies favour Ireland for the win, but the discipline shown by the Welsh on the weekend may ultimately count in their favour.

While Ireland can score tries, it is up against a superb defence in the shape of Wales, and the Welsh need just one of their backline players to spark to get the edge on Ireland.

With this in mind we suggest the back bet on Wales in this fixture, with the Welsh trading just over Evens against the Irish.
