Fiji and Samoa have clashed eleven times in the past decade. Fiji has dominated Samoa in these encounters, taking six wins with their expansive style, while the more structured Samoans have held on for four wins.
The most recent meeting between these sides was in Suva in July, when Fiji put away Samoa 38-16.
Fiji has been disappointing at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. After putting away Namibia with a big score in the first round, Fiji looked short of ideas and structure as they went down to South Africa under a hail of tries.
While Fiji’s physical play was enough to keep the Boks on the back foot for the first 10 minutes of the match, they were ultimately beaten at their own game, and look a shadow of the side that competed at the 2007 World Cup.
Samoa, meanwhile, also looked good in the opening round before putting on a solid display against Wales in the second round. But for a disallowed try, the game may have turned out differently, and Samoa was left with its dignity intact.
The Samoans have played a more structured and mature game than usual at the World Cup, and this approach is likely to play dividends against the less structured Fijians. A team that almost put away Wales, and beat Australia a couple of months ago won’t be intimidated by the prospect of taking on their island rivals.
