England vs. Scotland Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

Saturday marks the first occasion that England and Scotland will meet on neutral soil. Scotland has done fairly well against the Auld enemy in recent years, and has to pull a win out of the bag to avoid missing out on the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in its history.

England vs. Scotland Trends Analysis

England and Scotland have had a tense rivalry in recent years, trading blows on a home and away basis in the 6 Nations, with England taking three wins at Twickenham in the past six seasons, while Scotland has taken two wins and a draw from its matches at Murrayfield.

Prior to this period England enjoyed a long period of dominance, but the gradual but steady improvements across the border, combined with Scotland’s tendency to raise its game against England, mean that the English won’t be taking anything for granted in this fixture.

England should be feeling confident coming into this match. After failing to hit top gear against Argentina, and then Georgia, the English went into overdrive against Romania, pulling off a big win against the Eastern Europeans as their backline appeared to play itself into form.

However, given England’s stuttering performance against Scotland, there are also questions surrounding how England will perform when up again a full strength Tier I nation.

Scotland have left it until the last moment to pick their strongest team. With changes at center, wing and scrum half, with Sean Lamont taking Graeme Morrison’s place in the midfield, Simon Danielli coming in at wing and Mike Blair picked at scrum half, the backline looks far more threatening.

There’s little question that Scotland was the stronger team against Romania, and that foul weather, inability to score tries and some poor decisions cost them the match. The new-look team will know where it needs to improve on Saturday, and England can expect the Scots to come out fighting.

England vs. Scotland Betting Tips

This is going to be a tight encounter, and England are under huge pressure to beat Scotland, and at a minimum pick up a point in the fixture. Should England lose this match by 7 points they will likely conceded the group to Argentina, and have to face New Zealand in the quarterfinals.

Scotland could well win this match, but we think it will be close, and that England’s place at the group summit is safe.

Our England vs. Scotland betting tip is therefore to take the +11 handicap Betfred is offering on Scotland at even odds, in a match that England will have to wrest away from a quality Scotland side.
