Le Crunch visits Eden Park this weekend when traditional Six Nations rivals, England and France, meet in the 2011 Rugby World Cup quarterfinals. Neither team has turned on the style at the tournament, and can be counted lucky that they’ve drawn each other for this fixture.
England and France have clashed fifteen times in the past decade. France has a slight edge in these encounters, taking eight wins to seven for England.
However, the two have met twice at the World Cup during this period, with England winning both encounters.
England didn’t look very convincing as it reached the quarterfinals with a last gasp victory against Scotland. The English were up against the wall for most of the match, and if Scotland had shown a bit more self-belief England may well have been on its way home.
Nevertheless England did emerge from Group B unbeaten, and can only improve as the tournament progresses. The English forwards are capable of doing the job against the top teams, and the likes of Chris Ashton indicate that England has real power amongst its backs.
France, however, creeps into the quarterfinals on the back of a dreadful display in Pool A. After a poor display against Japan, the French underwhelmed against Canada before losing to New Zealand and conceding the upset of the tournament to Tonga.
Marc Lievremont’s bizarre selections continue to affect his team, and there is talk of open rebellion amongst his team. If the French coach persists with playing Morgan Parra at flyhalf, the French are virtually certain to bow out of the tournament on the weekend.
England should win this match based on form at the tournament to date. However, when France is in the mix there is no telling what will happen. Passion plays a huge role in the French game, and if Lievremont gets his selections right on the weekend you can expect France to give it a real go.
Bookies aren’t giving much leverage in the handicap markets, with France on +2.5 in the no draw handicap markets. This is a signal of how tight the match should be, and it’s easily the toughest quarterfinal to call.
England have played ugly rugby to reach the quarters while France hasn’t hit top gear once. It would be just like the French to turn on the style when it counts most, and they certainly have the personnel to beat England.
We’d wait on the selections for this match before betting. If Lievremont plays Francois Trinh Duc at flyhalf, our bets are on France winning this fixture at the best match odds you can find. If he persists with Parra, put your money on the English to secure a place in the semis.
