Australia takes on South Africa in the first of two Southern Hemisphere quarterfinals on Sunday. This is the quarterfinal that nobody anticipated, as the two giants of world rugby vie for a place against New Zealand in the semifinals.
Australia and South Africa have played one another thirteen times in the past five years. Australia has won eight of these matches while five have gone the way of the Springboks. In the last two seasons South Africa has won just one of its five matches against the Wallabies.
Australia comes into the quarterfinals smarting from its loss to Ireland. While the Aussies went to put big victories past Russia and the USA, they won’t be feeling terribly confident in their defence after Russia became the first side since Wales in 1987 to score three tries against them in a World Cup match.
The return of talismanic Digby Ione to the Australian backs should add a new dimension to Australia’s play on Sunday, and there’s no question that they possess the more potent backline. However, it’s the forward department where they may come unstuck against the Boks’ big men.
South Africa, meanwhile, survived a close game against Samoa to top Group D. The Springboks were unconvincing against Tier I opposition, and are going to miss the physical presence of Francois Steyn at center. Steyn’s absence will also affect the Bok capacity to score long-range penalties, and Jean de Villiers has been left with the unenviable task of playing himself into form against Australia’s strong center pairing.
Bookies are being conservative for this fixture with Australia handed a slim -2.5 handicap for the match as nominal favourites.
We feel that Australia’s advantage should be bigger than this, as the Wallabies backline is yet to hit top gear and certainly has the capacity to wear down the Bok defence.
Out Australia vs. South Africa betting tip is therefore to go with a handicap bet on the Wallabies at +2.5 at Betfred
