Australia meets in Ireland in this weekend’s feature match at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. While Australia is a massive favourite for this match, Ireland will be playing their hearts out as they look to climb to the summit of Group C.
Australia and Ireland have met nine times in the past decade. Australia has won six of these matches, while two matches went the way of Ireland, and one match produced a last minute draw.
Australia looked the most composed and effective of the tournament favourites in the first round of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, putting away Italy in style without conceding a try in the process.
The Tri Nations champions now have four wins from their last five matches, and look the best of the teams at the tournament so far. However, World Cup history tells us that this is when favourites are at their biggest risk of an upset.
Ireland, by contrast, is looking rickety. They managed to beat the USA in the first round without ever looking convincing, and that, added to their failure to win a single Summer Test marks them as a massive underdog for this fixture.
However, Ireland has the beating of Australia, and have competed evenly with Australia over the past five years. They’re also free of expectation or pressure in this match, and will have the freedom to play creative, expansive rugby.
Bookies don’t seem to think this will be a close game, with -10.5 offered in the no draw handicap markets on Australia.
This looks a fair enough handicap given Australia’s form to date, but it fails to take into account the fact that Australia last beat Ireland by more than 7 points in 2006 in Perth.
Ireland will be up for this match and we shouldn’t read too much into their recent form. Our Australia vs Ireland betting tip is therefore to take Ireland on the handicap markets at +10.5 at odds of evens.
