Argentina takes on Georgia in a fascinating Group B clash at the 2011 Rugby World Cup this weekend. Depending on the results of the Scotland/England game, Argentina may need to win this game well to guarantee their place in the next round of the tournament, while Georgia come into this fixture buoyed by their midweek defeat of Romania.
Argentina and Georgia have played each other just once in the past decade – at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Argentina beat Georgia comfortably on that occasion, scoring 4 tries on their way to a 33-3 win.
The Argentineans are once again showing impressive World Cup form in 2011. After entering the tournament as dark horses, the Argentineans came close to putting away England in the opening match before strolling past Romania and handing Scotland a shock defeat in the third round.
Argentina’s job is almost finished, but they’ll need to put away Georgia in style to guarantee their place in the quarterfinals.
With injuries aplenty to deal with, Argentina may steer a B side into this match. However, their reserves have been very impressive at this World Cup, and should be able to take it to Georgia.
Georgia comes into this match after beating Romania, and will put everything it has into claiming a Tier I scalp at the World Cup. The Georgians stood up to England earlier in the tournament and have both the form and tournament experience to make life hard for the Argentineans.
However, having to play two matches in a week is going to have an impact on the Georgian side, which doesn’t have the same player depth as the top tier nations. While the Georgians will be up for it in the first half, expect them to fade later in the game.
Argentina should pull away from Georgia in the second half of this match, but the Georgians may do enough to put the Argentineans off their gameplan and prevent a runaway win.
Bookies seem to concur with this analysis, and have priced Georgia within three tries of Argentina in the handicap market at +20.
Our feeling is that tired bodies and overenthusiasm in the first half may catch up with Georgia, and that Argentina will break away in the final quarter.
Our Argentina vs. Georgia betting tip is therefore to take the -20 handicap on Argentina, backing them for a big win against the Eastern Europeans.
