2012 Victor Chandler Chase Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

the 2012 Victor Chandler Chase pits some of national hunt racing’s most exciting 2 mile chaser prospects against each other at Ascot on Saturday.

2012 Victor Chandler Chase Race Favourites

1. Finian’s Rainbow
Finian’s Rainbow was one of the novice chasers to watch in 2011, winning the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree after placing second in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at Cheltenham. He started the new season with a win in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase, and looks like he may be one of the horses to watch this season. However, priced at 2/1 he looks a bit underpriced, and offers no value on each-way bets. It’s all or nothing if you want to back one of the brightest prospects in national hunt racing.

2. Al Ferof
Al Ferof started his career as a promising hurdler, going as far as a win in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. He’s since graduated to fences, with wins in a Grade 2 novices’ chase at Cheltenham earlier this season, followed by a win in the grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase. At 3/1 he’s a tempting back bet, even if he offers no value each-way, and could certainly upset the race favourite on Saturday.

3. Somersby
Somersby isn’t quite as impressive. While he’s good enough at finishing in the top three, with 11 places from 13 starts over fences, he’s not a pure 2 mile specialist and has won just once race since December of 2009. In his most recent outing he finished 4th in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, after a second place at the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase. Where he offers value is on each-way bets, as he’ll pay out with a place at 6/1.

2012 Victor Chandler Chase Long Shots

Gauvain looks like a better option than Somersby. He won the Peterborough Chase earlier this season, beating Somersby, and has won another one of his last three races. He’s a tempramental horse, however, and fell in his second last outing. He doesn’t look a credible threat to the first two favourites, but could offer each-way value at 9/1.

2012 Victor Chandler Chase Betting Tips

Most bookies are only paying each way bets to second place in the 2011 Victor Chandler Chase, which means you’ll need to pick between Al Ferof and Finian’s Rainbow for a straight back bet. It’s something of a coin toss, but based on two wins in his last two races and a marginally better price, the fast-improving Al Ferof is our 2012 Victor Chandler Chase betting tip.
