The Grade 1 chase highlight of the 2011 Grand National Meeting has drawn a small field, with just five horses opposing Denman as he goes in search of his first victory since the 2009 Hennessy Gold Cup.
1. Denman
Denman has faded from the limelight somewhat since taking the Hennessy, failing to take another win. However, he’s still managed to finish second twice in a row at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and on his day is one of the most competitive horses in national hunt racing with his never-say-die attitude. With Ruby Walsh onboard he’s going to be hard to beat, and he’s great value at his price of 6/5 at Paddy Power.
2. Nacarat
Nacarat has never quite lived up to expectations in national hunt chases, settling for wins in smaller races while finishing there or thereabouts in the big races without having claimed a Grade 1. The fact that he finished third in the totesport Bowl last year, in a race won by What A Friend, suggests that he’s not going to reverse this trend in 2011, and is probably a good option for lay bets, priced at 5/1 at most bookies.
3. Punchestowns
Punchestowns is best know for his exploits over hurdles, but has impressed since taking the step up to fences. In six chases he’s won three and placed in two, but his one failure doesn’t bode well for his prospects in this race, having finished 5th in his last race – the 2011 RSA Chase at Cheltenham. At odds of 5/1 at Paddy Power he’s nevertheless an option for a place or each-way bet, as he could well make the top three.
Could their be a surprise in the totesport Bowl? A faller in the top three would shake things up a bit, and Carole’s Legacy would be our pick to exploit the confusion. This horse hasn’t finished outside the top two in ten races, and while the totesport Bowl will be a step up, will reward each-way backers handsomely at a price of 13/2 at Boyelsports.
Our 2011 totesport Bowl betting tip is to take the value on Denman. He showed he’s still a class contender at Cheltenham, and without the likes of Kauto Star, Imperial Commander or Long Run to oppose him, should have the winning of this race.
