2011 St. James’s Palace Stakes Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

The 2011 St. James’s Stakes is the final Group 1 race of the first day of the 2011 Royal Ascot meeting, and see 2,000 Guineas winner, Frankel, make his first appearance since his triumph at Newmarket in May.

2011 St. James’s Palace Stakes Race Favourites

1. Frankel
Frankel has been in training since winning the 2011 2,000 Guineas, and comes into this race as a short odds favourite. This horse has class to burn with six wins from six starts to his credit, including another Group 1 win in the Dewhurst Stakes as a 2-year-old. Unfortunately his record has him trading under Evens, which means there’s little value, and high risk, on a back bet on the favourite.

2. Wootton Basset
Wootton Basset looked like a good candidate for dominance in the French 3-year-old circuit when he won the Grand Criterium last season. However, that win failed to translate into a win when he took on a Group 1 field in the Poule de Essai de Poulains earlier this season. While he was unbeaten coming into that race, a 5th place finish suggests he may struggle to hold his own against the finest milers in the UK and Ireland.

3. Grand Prix Boss
Japanese raider, Grand Prix Boss, has been causing ripples in the Asian racing scene, where steady improvement culminated in a win in the Mile Cup. His overall record is inconsistent, but he does look to be improving rapidly and this suggests that he may be worth a look for each-way bets at a price well over 10/1.

2011 St. James’s Palace Stakes Long Shots

Zoffany is an interest Irish prospect. He’s used to running over distances shorter than a mile, but his early acceleration could give him the edge he needs to score in this race. He’s won three and placed in two of his last five races, and at odds of close to 40/1 at Betfair is certainly an interesting each-way option.

2011 St. James’s Palace Stakes Betting Tips

We’re not going to worry about Frankel in this race. While he’s priced low enough for a lay bet, he could win it, and offers little value on back bets. We’ll therefore cast our net wider as we look for a value each-way punt for a place. With this in mind we’re going to put a small each-way punt on Zoffany finishing in the top three in the 2011 St. James’s Palace Stakes.
