One of the stars of national hunt racing returns to the track on Saturday as Big Buck’s makes his second appearance of the season in the 2011 Long Walk Hurdle.
1. Big Buck’s
Big Buck’s comes into this race on the back of 13 consecutive wins, and with 8 Grade 1 victories beneath his belt. Acknowledged as the finest staying hurdler in history, and coming into this race on the back of yet another win in the Long Distance Hurdle, Big Buck’s is going to take some stopping at Ascot on Saturday. Bookies have him priced well below evens, and those looking for a modest return on a back bet are fairly safe backing him for the win.
2. Dynaste
Dynaste is a relative newcomer to national hunt racing, with just 8 races to his name. He’s won two of these, including his last race – a Grade 3 – and has placed in another two. There’s nothing to suggest he poses a real threat to Big Buck’s in this race, although he’s certainly one to watch in the future. At 7/1 he offers decent each-way value, but there’s no guarantee he’ll place in the race.
3. Celestial Halo
Celestial Halo hasn’t really fulfilled the potential he showed when he won the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham back in 2008. Since then he’s claimed several Grade 2 titles, but has disappointed in the bigger races. He’s already raced twice this season with a win in a Grade 2 handicap before finishing 3rd in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. With his experience he could be good enough for a place in this race, and he certainly offers value at a price of around 10/1.
Sparky May is one of the more promising young horses on the hurdles scene, and was impressive last season, placing in races at both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, as well as claiming a win in a Grade 2 earlier in the year. The second youngest horse in the field offers good each way value at 16/1, and could easily make the places on Saturday.
Big Buck’s is a banker, and there’s no point in putting riskier bets on the others in the field in the hope they’ll place when the market leader is as good a bet as you’re likely to get. Our 2011 Long Walk Hurdle betting tip is to go with a straight back bet on Big Buck’s at the best odds you can find.
