Boxing Day brings the first big Grade 1 chase of the year as some of the stars of national hunt racing line up for the 2011 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park.
1. Long Run
2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Long Run, headlines the betting for the 2011 King George VI Chase. He’ll also be looking to defend the title he won last year, and is trading at close to evens at many bookies. While Long Run is without a doubt one of the strongest chasers on the circuit, his loss to Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase in November suggests that he’s by no means a certainty for this race. He looks somewhat underpriced in the markets, which makes him a good option for a lay bet.
2. Kauto Star
Just when we thought he was dead and buried, one of the greatest national hunt racehorses of all time came out of nowhere to win the Betfair Chase, taking his first win of the season. Kauto Star has already won this race four times, and at 4/1 Kauto Star is a brilliant option for an each-way to nothing bet, as he’ll return your money with a place and pay handsomely for a win.
3. Master Minded
Like his stablemate Kauto Star, Master Minded did not have the best of seasons in in 2010-11, finishing 8th in the 2011 Queen Champion Chase – a disastrous result in a race he has dominated for so long. He bounced back to win the Melling Chase at the Aintree Festival, and has also shown promising early-season form with a win in the Grade 2 Amlin 1965 Chase in November. While he’s not used to longer distances, and has never competed in the King George, Master Minded certainly looks tempting at odds of around 5/1 at most bookies.
It will take something special to crash the party in the 2011 King George VI Chase, and the only entry who looks capable of doing so is Riverside Theatre. He hasn’t raced much since winning the 2011 Ascot Chase, but his second place at the 2010 King George VI Chase suggests he has the potential to impress on Saturday. He’s been out the game for so long that there’s no telling what form he’s in, but remains hard to ignore as an each-way or place bet option at odds of 25/1.
Our King George VI Chase betting tip is simple – take an each way bet on Kauto Star. Not only is he a proven performer in this race and on this course, but he also beat Long Run last time out. He’s far too good to finish out the reckoning entirely, and you’re fairly safe in terms of getting your money back if he fluffs it and only manages to place.
