2011 Grand National Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

One of the year’s racing highlights thunders into action on Saturday as 40 horses compete in the 2011 Grand National steeplechase.

2011 Grand National Race Favourites

1. The Midnight Club
The Midnight Club is the ace in Willie Mullins’ pack at the 2011 Grand National. This horse is a consistent performer, with two wins and four places from eight starts over fences. He heads to the national on the back of a win in the Grade 2 Bobbyjo Chase in Ireland, and a look at his history in handicaps shows that he won’t struggle too much if his handicap stays around the 11st mark. At a price of 8/1 at Paddy Power, and with 2011 Cheltenham champion jockey, Ruby Walsh, onboard, he’s a very handy favourite and option for an each way punt.

2. Backstage
Gordon Elliot sees his entry, Backstage, start the 2011 Grand National at second place in the betting. This horse has achieved three wins and three third places from thirteen starts over fences, and is in some solid form, with two wins on the trot heading to Aintree. These details aside, he’s not overly convincing as he’s yet to win a race of substance and has never won over a distance greater than 3 miles 2 furlongs. At 12/1 he’s your best lay bet option in the race.

3. What A Friend
What A Friend is a real quality entry in the 2011 Grand National. After winning the Lexus Chase and totesport Bowl in 2010, he’s failed to pick up another win, and finished a respectable fourth in the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Whether he’s connections will put him at risk over the Aintree fences if his weight increases remains to be seen, but he’ll be an interesting option if he does compete at odds of 12/1 at Paddy Power.

2011 Grand National Long Shots

Ballabriggs is a very interesting candidate for the 2011 Grand National. He’s easily shown the best form of any of the top ten in the weights, with four wins and a place from his last five starts. He’s trading at 14/1 at Paddy Power, has won or placed in nine of his twelve starts over fences, and shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re planning a spread of each-way bets.

2011 Grand National Betting Tips

We’re tipping two horses for the 2011 Grand National. The Midnight Club is one of the most compelling favourites to have competed in this race in recent memory, and looks like an excellent option for a place. Our other bet will go on Ballabriggs, who looks overpriced given his recent form and record over fences.
