2011 Fighting Fifth Hurdle Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

The 2011 Fighting Fifth is the first major national hunt hurdles race of the season, and sees the season debut of star hurdler, Binocular.

2011 Fighting Fifth Hurdle Race Favourites

1. Binocular
Binocular had a strong start to his 2011 season with a 3rd place followed by two wins. However, his form dipped as the season progressed, leaving him with just one Grade 1 win. Given these performances, he looks underpriced at close to evens – especially given that there’s no way of tell how he’ll come off his summer break.

2. Celestial Halo
Celestial Halo will be running the second race of his season on Saturday, after winning his opening race, the Grade 2 Elite Hurdle. He raced well enough last season, picking up a win and four places before finishing last in the 2011 Aintree Hurdle. Given his recent form, he looks a strong contender to beat Binocular to the post.

3. Overturn
The heavily raced Irish raider, Overturn, is third in the betting thanks to two consecutive wins coming into this race. This horse didn’t have much of a break over the summer and will be racing his 10th event of the year on Saturday. He’s won three of his nine races this year, and achieved two places – with most of these races run at listed or handicap level. At 7/2 he looks woefully underpriced and cries out for a lay bet.

2011 Fighting Fifth Hurdle Long Shots

Brampour looks the most likely contender to crash the party on Saturday. He comes to Newcastle with two consecutive wins under his belt, including a win over a field of 23 in the Grade 3 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle. At a price of 8/1, he’s not a bad each-way option.

2011 Fighting Fifth Hurdle Betting Tips

There are only two horses in this field that offer value. Brampour is the way to go for an each-way punt, although this may not be worth the risk on each-way bets paying to second. A better option is to put a lay bet on Overturn who looks well underpriced and will pay out if he fails to win.
