2011 Ascot Gold Cup Preview & Tips

Posted on by editor

The 2011 Ascot Gold Cup is the Royal Meeting’s blue riband event, and the most prestigious race for thoroughbred stayers in the United Kingdom. A top quality field will attend the 2011 edition of this race, including several Group 1 and Classics winners.

2011 Ascot Gold Cup Race Favourites

1. Fame & Glory
2009 Irish Derby winner, Fame & Glory, is being widely tipped to take another big Group 1 at Ascot on Thursday. He hasn’t raced in a Group 1 since winning the Coronation Cup back in June last year, but has shown form with two wins in two recent Listed races. There’s just no telling how he’ll shape up after such a long break from top level competition, and while racing over 2 miles for the first time. Priced at around 2/1 at most bookies he looks an excellent lay bet.

2. Rite of Passage
Rite of Passage is the reigning Gold Cup champion and has already proven that he has the puff to win this marathon. While he finished 3rd behind Fame & Glory in a recent Listed outing, that race covered just 14 furlongs, and the extra 6 may well see him push past the Derby winner on Thursday. At a price of 3/1 he’s the best option for a straight back bet.

3. Duncan
In 16 races on the flat Duncan has finished without a place just six times. He’s a proven performer in Group 2 and Group 3 events, and recently won over 14 furlongs in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup. totesport has him going at 8/1, which looks like excellent value on this quality entry.

2011 Ascot Gold Cup Long Shots

The Gold Cup is arguably the most open Group 1 race over distance at the Ascot meeting, which means the event could easily serve up a long shot surprise. Motrice is a former handicap campaigner who has a knack for making the places and is no stranger to stayer’s distances. At odds of 25/1 at Bet365 he’s a great option for each way bets.

2011 Ascot Gold Cup Betting Tips

Our 2011 Ascot Gold Cup betting tip is to go with a lay bet on Fame & Glory, who’s done little to prove himself as a true stayer, and is being priced based on his rating and past form. If we had to shell out money on a back bet, we’d look at an each-way punt on Duncan, who looks a fair enough option for a place.
