The King George VI makes a belated appearance on the 15th of January following a slew of weather-enforced cancellations that prevented the race from taking place on Boxing Day. Kauto Star remains all set to be the star of the show as he goes in search of his fifth consecutive King George VI title.
1. Kauto Star
Bookies are offering ridiculously good value on Kauto Star, with the champion racehorse trading at around evens at top bookies like Bet365. With neither of his serious rivals, Denman or Imperial Commander, in the field for this race, it’s tough to imagine one of the young entries taking out the king of stayer chases. He may have fallen at Cheltenham this year, but Kauto Star is by no means a spent force (as his recent win in the Grade 1 JNwine Chase suggests) and looks like a great option for a solid back bet.
2. Long Run
Nicky Henderson’s Long Run is being talked up as the heir apparent to Kauto Star, but he’s still a bit green to justify the hype. While he did well in a couple of Grade 1 novices chases, his step up to the open age group races saw him trade wins for places in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham and the Grade 3 Paddy Power Gold Cup. He may be a horse to watch in future, but trading at odds of 5/1 at most bookies he’s the standout lay bet for the 2010 King George VI Chase.
3. Forpadydeplasterer
If you’re planning on betting on the places in the 2010 King George VI Chase, Forpadydeplasterer is your horse. He’s turned placing in major chases into an art form, with 2nd place in the 2009 Tingle Creek Chase, 2010 Queen Mother Champion Chase and 2010 Melling Chase. The only question is how he’s going to respond to the increase in distance in the King George VI, given that he’s done most of his racing over distances between 16 and 20 furlongs. Priced at 12/1 by Sportingbet, he’s definitely worth an each-way or place punt.
The fences may take some casualties on Sunday, which means its worth taking a look at which horses could offer value on a place. Our pick is Sizing Europe. This horse never quite lived up to his potential over hurdles, but impressed with a win in the Grade 1 Arkle Chase at Cheltenham earlier this year. He also finished second behind Kauto Star in the Grade 1 JNwine.com Champion Chase in Ireland in November, and might surprise some of the higher rated horses in the field. William Hill has him trading at odds of 14/1 – great value for each way bets.
Our 2010 King George VI Chase betting tip is simple. Bookies have made the same error they made with Master Minded in the Tingle Creek Chase, offering punters great value on a true champion. We’re backing Kauto Star and backing him well, with our hedge bet coming in the form of an each way punt on Sizing Europe.
