The 2012 Australian Open women’s draw promises to be open and dramatic, with four of last year’s grand slam champions vying for the title, along with a number of previous title winners, including the ever-formidable Serena Williams.
1. Petra Kvitova
2011 Wimbledon Championship winner, Petra Kvitova, heads the betting for the 2012 Australian Open. The young Russian cane from nowhere in 2011 to win 6 titles, including Wimbledon, the Paris Masters and the year end tour championships in Turkey. Kvitova’s price of 5/2 looks reasonable enough, since she’s won seven of her career titles to date on hard courts, and only recently helped Russia to win the Fed Cup.
2. Serena Williams
Serena Williams doesn’t look quite as deserving of her place in the betting. The 2010 Australian Open winner won just two titles in 2011, before losing in the final of the US Open. While Serena can never be overlooked, her grand slam winning days may be behind her with a host of younger players starting to dominate the WTA. At odds of 4/1 she looks a good lay betting option.
3. Victoria Azarenka
Victoria Azarenka finds herself third in the betting on the back of a win in the Sydney tournament in January, and an appearance in the final of the tour championships at the end of 2011. However, she’s never reached the final of a grandslam, and has gone past the 4th round only once in her career. At a price of 6/1 at Bet365 she’s not worth a back bet, and is a better option in the lay betting markets.
Several top contenders have failed to make it into the betting, with any one of Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur and Na Li more than capable of making the final of the 2012 Australian Open. This is great news for punters as each of these players offers real value on each-way bets even if they only make the final of the tournament.
Our 2012 Australian Open betting tip is to go with the most obvious candidate for an Australian Open win. Not only will Sam Stosur be playing in front of her home crowd, but she’s also the most recent grand slam champion, winning the US Open in 2011, and is no slouch on hard courts. At odds of 16/1 at Bet365\ she’s a real bargain bet!
