The 2012 Australian Open gets underway on the 16th of January as hundreds of the world’s top tennis players head to the smouldering heat of Melbourne to compete in the first grand slam of the season.
2011 will be remembered as the season that Novak Djokovic finally came goo don the potential he showed when winning his first Grand Slam in 2008 in Melbourne. The Serb won his second Australian Open in 2011, and followed it up with titles at Wimbledon and in the US Open – along with 5 Masters titles.
While Djokovic failed to make an impression in the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals, his grand slam performances in 2011 leave him in pole position in the betting coming into this tournament, trading at just over evens at most bookies.
Roger Federer has been marked as the biggest threat to Nadal at the tournament. After an indifferent season in 2011, Federer emerged as the champion at the World Tour Finals, proving he’s not a spent force in the game. However, both Federer and his fans will know that 2011 is likely to be the last year that Federer will have a realistic chance of adding to his grand slam tally.
Of course, there are more serious challengers to Djokovic than Federer. Rafael Nadal can only improve on his performances in 2011, while Juan Martin del Potro has recovered the sort of form that saw him triumph at the US Open in 2009.
Then there are the wildcards, like Janko Tipsarevic and Tomas Berdych, who’re certain to give some big names a real headache at the 2012 Australian Open.
The women’s draw looks as competitive as ever. Surprisingly 2011 Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova finds herself at the top of the betting markets, ahead of 2011 US Open winner, Sam Stosur. Meanwhile, 2011 Australian Open champion, Kim Clijsters, is fourth in the betting.
Surprisingly Serena Williams finds herself priced lower than three of last year’s grand slam champions, and lies second behind Kvitova in the betting. At 4/1 the American looks well underpriced, and has everything to do to prove that she’s not a spent force in the women’s game.
Of course, women’s grand slams have failed to produce a consistent championship winner since the heydays of Justine Henin and Serena Williams, which means that any one of two dozen up and coming players from Europe and Asia could make an impression on the tournament.
The best value to be had in the 2012 Australian Open lies in putting each-way punts on players priced above 4/1 in the betting. These bets will return profits even if your player only makes the final of the tournament.
In the men’s draw, Rafael Nadal is the obvious choice, with the Spaniard priced at 11/2 by William Hill and overdue for a big performance on hard courts.
In the women’s draw Samantha Stosur is ridiculously overpriced. Little respect has been given to the 2011 US Open winner, despite her obvious proficiency on hard courts, and you can get her as high as 16/1 at Bet365, which means you’ll score odds of 4/1 on half your stake if she only makes the final.
