The 2012 Australian Open sees the kings of men’s tennis converge on Melbourne for two weeks of intense action. The tournament will see Novak Djokovic go in search of his third Australian Open title, and his 5th career grand slam title.
1. Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic was the biggest name in tennis in 2011. After struggling to find form in the previous two seasons, Djokovic played explosive tennis in 2011, winning three grand slams and five Masters series titles. While the Serb failed to make an impression at the ATP World Finals, he’d already proved his point several times over during the course of the year, and looks a strong contender in Melbourne. Trading at close to evens, he’s as good a back bet as you’ll find at the tournament.
2. Roger Federer
Roger Federer had a quiet year by his own high standards, making just one grand slam final (the French Open), winning the Paris Masters and finishing the season off on a high with victory in the ATP World Finals. Federer knows that it’s now or never if he wishes to add to his record breaking haul of grand slam titles, and that he’s going to struggle to challenge the young guns as time goes on. Bookies have Federer priced at under 4/1, which means he’s not an option for each-way bets – with this in mind, he’s probably not worth the risk for a straight back bet a low odds.
3. Andy Murray
Andy Murray is nothing if not consistent. He consistently takes a few Masters series titles every season, and consistently fails to win grand slams. Murray won both the Shanghai and Cincinnati Masters in 2011, and made the final of the Australian Open. He’s started 2012 off on a high note, with a win in Brisbane, but the questions over his temperament and ability to go the full distance will linger until such a time that he finally wins a grand slam. At a price of 5/1 at bet365 he’s a reasonable each-way option, but we don’t see Murray doing in Melbourne in 2012.
Rafael Nadal is the obvious omission from the top of the betting markets. While 2011 was hardly his best season, with one grand slam title in Paris, and a single Masters title in Monte Carlo, he’s certainly capable of more and won’t stay in a slump for much longer. At a price of 11/2 at bet365, Nadal looks like premium value of an each-way punt, given he has a solid chance of making the final.
Our 2012 Australian Open betting tip is to back Rafael Nadal with an each-way bet to end his slump and make a comeback in Melbourne. While he’ll have his work cut out beating Novak Djokovic if they meet in the final, there’s no question he has the stamina and skill to reach the final, and if he does so will pay out a small but decent return on each-way bets.
