Tonga is back in action at the Rugby World Cup next Wednesday as the Pacific Islanders go in search of their first win against Canada.

Tonga and Canada have met 17 times in international test matches. Tonga has won 14 of these fixtures, while 3 went the way of Canada. These teams have met just once in the last decade, however, with Tonga losing that encounter 24-7.
Tonga did not look overly impressive in its first match of the World Cup. Given that the opponents were a first string All Black side, some will say Tonga did well to contain their hosts.
Nevertheless there’s no way to sugar-coat a 31 point loss. Tonga will be hoping that they can return to the healthy try-scoring rate that saw them score 15 tries in their five previous fixtures.
Canada comes into this match in decent form, with three wins from its three test matches this year – two of which were scored against the United States. With no matches against top tier opposition it is hard to tell exactly where Canada stands in the international pecking order.
One thing that we do know about Canada is that its backline could pose a threat to Tonga. With 11 tries scored in three matches, the Canadians should have the ability to get points on the board.

This is one of the most even encounters in the first round of World Cup matches, and should make for a great spectacle. Either team could win it, and it’ll be a confrontation between the muscular play of Tonga and the all-round game played by Canada.
Bookies aren’t giving much leverage on this match with Canada trading at around evens while you’ll pick up Tonga well below evens.
Our feeling is that Tonga has an edge in this match based purely on its match against New Zealand. The Tongans are already a few gears up in the World Cup, while Canada will be coming in from a standing start and may not be prepared for the physicality of the Pacific Islanders.
