Wales takes on reigning World Cup champions, South Africa, in the highlight of the first round of the 2011 Rugby World Cup fixtures.
South Africa and Wales have clashed eleven times in the past ten years, with Wales failing to win a single on of these matches. However, in recent seasons Wales has run South Africa close several times, and the last three matches between these sides were decided by 5 points or less.
South Africa’s build up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup hasn’t been great. The Boks finished stone cold last in the Tri Nations, but did manage to pick up a commanding win over a second string All Black side in their final match of the tournament.
The Springboks have scored just 3 tries in four matches this year – an indication that playing a backline similar to the one that took the World Cup in 2007 may not be the best strategy. Not only does the backline lack punch and pace, but it seems to be lacking in creativity and relies heavily on the solid efforts of the forwards.
Wales has won two and lost two of its Summer test matches, losing to the Barbarians and England before taking their game up a notch to put away England in Cardiff and score a commanding win over Argentina,
The Welsh side’s fitness training looks to have been excellent, and 11 tries in four matches is testament to incisive running and creativity amongst the backs. The biggest obstacle to Wales’ success is in a forward pack that can be bullied around by more physical teams.
The result of this match is going to hinge on how Wales’ forwards front up to the Bok pack. If Wales gets pushed off the ball then pressure and penalties will push the match in the Boks favour.
However, should Wales stand up to forward pressure and have enough ball to spread to the backline, the Springboks are going to have a real fight on their hands, and could be run ragged by a talented Welsh backline.
Smart money says South Africa will win, however the 1/1 offered on Wales with a +13 handicap looks like a big misstep by the bookies. Wales will be throwing everything into this match, and if they do lose won’t do so by a wide margin.
Our South Africa vs Wales betting tips is therefore to take the value on the +13 handicap offered on Wales by Ladbrokes.
