New Zealand and Tonga have clashed just once in the past decade. That match, played at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, resulted in a huge win for New Zealand as the All Blacks scored 13 tries in a 91-7 win.
New Zealand will be looking for another big win against Tonga in the opening match of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks come into the tournament on the back of two defeats in the Tri Nations, and desperately need a big win to build momentum and confidence.
New Zealand has won three of its last five matches – a poor record for the most successful team in rugby. The All Blacks handed pastings to Fiji, a second string South African side and then Australia before losing to full strength Australian and South African sides in the final round of Tri Nations matches.
Tonga’s recent match record matches that of New Zeland with three wins followed by two losses. The Tongans made good account of themselves in the Pacific Nations Cup, beating Fiji twice and Samoa once before losing to Japan and Fiji in their last two matches.
The Tongans have had a healthy try-scoring rate in the last five games, running in 15 tries for a 3 try a game average. Defence could be sharper, however, with the Tongans conceding at least two tries in the majority of their recent matches.
New Zealand vs. Tonga Betting Tips
This is a big match for New Zealand, who can’t afford to take the Tongans lightly but won’t want to risk injury to key personnel against the physical islanders.
While a New Zealand win is a certainty, it’s unlikely the Tongans will be buried under a 13 try avalanche, and we can expect a fairly balanced confrontation in the early stages of the match. However, New Zealands forwards should wear down the Tongans by the second half and open up the match.
