Saturday brings one of the most keenly anticipated matches at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, as New Zealand clashes with its World Cup nemesis France.
France and New Zealand have enjoyed a fierce rivalry over recent years, with France eliminating New Zealand from two of the last three World Cup tournaments.
France has been a solid match for New Zealand over the past four seasons winning two and losing two of its last four matches against the All Blacks, including a win in Dunedin in 2009. However, New Zealand won seven of the eight previous clashes between the teams in the past decade.
New Zealand hit top gear against Japan in the last round, putting over 80 points past the hapless Japanese. That victory was added to a somewhat lackluster win against Tonga.
The All Blacks now have three wins from their last five matches, but will be acutely aware that they have lost both their last two matches against top-tier nations.
However, the pressure on the All Blacks to win will not be as intense as in previous World Cup matches against France. Should New Zealand lose this match, they would effectively benefit from being pushed into the other half of the draw where they would face only Northern Hemisphere teams on the way to the final.
France, meanwhile, can also relax and play their best rugby, as a loss in this match will set up a likely quarterfinal against Wales, while a win will set up a date with Scotland.
The French have turned on the class when they have needed it at this World Cup, blowing away both Japan and Canada in the final quarter of both their World Cup matches to date.
Against Canada, France showed some touches of world class play, with Vincent Clerc returning to his formidable best with a hat-trick while Damien Traille produced the individual try of the tournament to date as he ran 60 meters through the Canadian defence to score.
New Zealand is a fairly solid favourite for this match with bookies pricing the All Blacks well below evens for this match. However, any World Cup aficionado will know that France bring out their A game against the All Blacks, and we can expect a tight contest on Saturday.
New Zealand won’t be caught napping in this match, and are a solid option for the win. However, bookies may be exaggerating the difference between these teams with a -16 handicap on the All Blacks in the handicap betting markets.
We get the feeling that it may be France who is surprised in this fixture. New Zealand will be playing for revenge, and there’sa real danger they could run away with the game in the first half. Our New Zealand vs. France betting tip is therefore to take the -16 handicap on the All Blacks at Betfred to double your money.
