France vs. Tonga Preview & Tips
France takes on Tonga in what amounts to a Group A quarterfinal playoff this weekend. The Tongans need to win by a margin of least 34 points to eliminate France from the tournament.
France vs. Tonga Trends Analysis
France and Tonga have clashed just once in the past decade, with France brushing the Tongans aside 43-8 in Toulouse in 2005.
France is not having the best of tournaments. With Marc Lievremont sticking to his haphazard selection policy, France struggled against Japan, underperformed against Canada and lost by a large margin to New Zealand.
With Morgan Parra again selected at flyhalf despite failing to protect his defensive channel on the weekend, France may be setting themselves up for trouble against a team with talented backline players.
Tonga didn’t start the World Cup very well, but has worked hard since its surprise loss to Canada, eventually scoring a big win against Japan in the 3rd round.
There’s little doubt that the Tongans have the personnel to put top teams under pressure, and they will be looking to upset France’s game and prey on the weak French midfield with their big powerful runners.

France could lose this fixture. While the side has the talent and depth to beat the best, its coach seems to be working against his team’s own best interests, and by selecting Morgan Parra at flyhalf has created an opportunity for Tonga to break the French defence.
Tonga has been handed a +25 handicap for this fixture. Given the disarray in the French camp, and the fact that their biggest victory was by 27 points, we think the Tongans could keep the French to a more slender winning margin, and even spring an upset.
