Australia takes on Italy in one of the highlights of the third day of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Australia vs. Italy Trends Analysis
Australia has played Italy seven times in the past decade, winning every one of these matches. The closest the Italians came to beating the Wallabies was in Rome in 2006, when Australia won by 7 points. Every other match between these teams during this period has had a winning margin of 10 points or more.
Australia is in good shape coming into the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and are considered tournament favourites after the Australian Reds franchise won the Super 15 before the Wallabies took the Tri Nations tournament.
Not that Australia hasn’t had its wobbles. The Wallabies have won three of their five matches this season, losing once to New Zealand, and conceding their first ever defeat to Samoa. A brilliant backline has kept the try count up, with 13 tries scored in five matches.
Italy’s form hasn’t been quite as impressive. The Italians played two summer tests, narrowly avoiding defeat to Japan before losing to Scotland at Murrayfield. However, there’s no question that this is an improved side – as their win over France in the Six Nations illustrated earlier this year – and they may be a real challenge when the rust is shaken off.
Italy has scored a respectable 10 tries in its last five matches, but the backline still suffers from a lack of direction and penetration, and will struggle to crack an Aussie defence honed in the forges of Tri Nations rugby.

Italy has the potential to upset Australia, which may not field a first string team for this match, however, there’s little doubt that the Wallabies will win this one.
