The 2011 Prince of Wales’s Stakes features some of the most talented 4-year-old and above racehorses at the Ascot meeting. This year’s race has once again drawn a strong field, led by Tattersalls Gold Cup winner, So You Think.
1. So You Think
New Zealand born So You Think is in the UK after winning several Group 1 titles in Australia last season, including the Cox Plate, before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup. He’s flourished in Ireland, taking two wins at the Curragh in 2011, including the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. It’s not often that an antipodean raider makes it to the UK, and he’s a fascinating prospect for this race.
2. Planteur
Planteur is an Irish raider who has been dominating the 4yo+ circuit in France this season, with two wins from two starts in French Group ones. This entry has finished in the places in most of the Group 1s he has run in, and tends to do well in the sort of mixed field that is lined up for the 2011 Prince of Wales’s Stakes. However, priced under 4/1 by most bookies, he doesn’t look worth the straight back bet.
3. Rewilding
Rewilding is a seasoned travel, who picked up the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic on his last trip overseas. He has a win at the Group 2 Great Voltiguer Stakes to his credit, and finished 3rd in last year’s Derby. All told he looks like he could certainly place in this race, and at a price of 14/1 can’t be ignored for each-way punts.
You can’t ignore 2010 Derby winner, Workforce. This horse not only triumphed at the Epsom Derby last year, but went on to take one of the toughest races of them all, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe later in the season. He’s also still in form with a recent Group 3 win to his credit. Running over the Derby distance he should be a force to be reckoned with and offers superb value trading as high as 35/1 at Betfair.
So You Think definitely looks worth a look in the 2011 Prince of Wales’s Stakes betting markets, but at his short odds would need to win to pay out. We’d much rather put our money on the brilliant Workforce, who has been totally overpriced for this race.
