2011 Ascot Stakes Preview & Tips

The 2011 Ascot Stakes is the first genuine stayers race of the Royal Meeting. A decent sized field lines up for this 2 mile 4 furlong handicap, which has produced a short odds favourite in the shape of national hunt racehorse, Junior.

2011 Ascot Stakes Race Favourites

1. Junior
Junior will look to cement his burgeoning reputation as one of the most versatile racehorses in the UK on Tuesday as he looks to add the Ascot Stakes to the Cheltenham Festival’s Kim Muir Challenge Cup trophy he took earlier in the year. This is an impressive horse, accustomed to much longer distances than the 2 miles 4 furlongs he’ll run in this race. What’s more, he hasn’t finished outside the places since 2009, and boasts extensive experience over longer distances. At odds of 4/1 he’s an excellent each-way to nothing bet.

2. Zigato
Zigato doesn’t appear to be in quite the same league as Junior. He’s won two of his four starts over the flat, but has never travelled a distance greater than 2 miles. He’s up here because of a win at Ascot in May, but doesn’t look to be a serious threat to the favourite.

3. Veiled
Veiled is another raider from national hunt racing who will look to use her superior staying power to make an impression at the Royal Meeting. She’s been in decent form this year, with three wins from five starts, including a 2 mile 6 furlong win at Cheltenham in April. Paddy Power has her going at 11/2 which looks like decent value on each-way punts.

2011 Ascot Stakes Long Shots

This race is wide open, with plenty of value to be had on each-way bets. Ashbrittle is a tough horse to ignore. He’s finished outside the places just once in five races during his career, and has a win over 15 furlongs. At odds of 14/1 he’s a decent each-way prospect.
